About

You’re carrying more than others realize.

Holding it all together comes with a weight few people ever see.

From the outside, things look fine.

But underneath, something isn’t working.

You’ve learned to push through, manage pressure, and handle things on your own.

And maybe that worked for a long time.

Until it didn’t.

Now something in you is ready for a different way forward – a way to reconnect with yourself and move through life with more clarity, confidence, and steadiness.

How I Work

I help men understand the patterns that have kept them going – and the ones that are now getting in the way.

My approach is practical, experiential, relational, and grounded.

We focus on what’s happening – in your life, your relationships, and inside you.

Not just ideas or surface-level strategies – but what’s driving your reactions.

This isn’t about motivation, quick fixes, or pushing harder.

This is about learning how to work with what’s happening inside you, so real change can happen – and actually stick.

We move at a pace that feels solid and honest.

  • Not forcing anything.
  • Not rushing the process.
  • But also, not letting you stay stuck in the same patterns.

If you’re in a relationship, this work often changes more than just how you feel — it changes how you show up.

What This Work Helps You Do

Over time, you begin to understand the patterns shaping how you think, react, and relate – and where they’re now getting in the way.

You start to notice what’s happening in real time, instead of getting pulled into the same reactions automatically.

Where you might have shut down, avoided conflict, or pushed through, you begin to stay present.

Not perfectly.
But more consistently.

You develop a different kind of strength – not based on control or pressure, but on the ability to stay with yourself, even when things are uncomfortable.

From there, things start to shift.

You communicate more clearly.
Set boundaries with more confidence.
Show up with more steadiness and integrity

Connection becomes easier.
Intimacy feels more natural.
You trust yourself more.

This work changes how you relate to yourself — and that changes everything else.

This work isn’t about fixing you or becoming someone else.

It’s about changing your relationship to what’s in the way – so that you can lead your life from a more grounded, self-led place.

What It Feels Like to Work Together

I work in a way that is perceptive, grounded, and relational.

I tend to see patterns quickly and help you make sense of them without feeling analyzed or picked apart.

I bring a calm, steady presence.

When things get uncomfortable, I stay with you.

We don’t rush past it.
We don’t smooth it over.
We work with it.

I pay close attention to what’s happening in the moment – shifts in tone, your body, your energy, and the space between us.

Often, those small moments are where meaningful change begins.

My aim is for you to feel seen and understood – without having to defend yourself or prove anything.

All parts of you are welcome here.

Even the ones you’ve learned to hide, push away, or feel ashamed of.

About Howard Ratner, LMFT

Men’s work isn’t theoretical for me – it’s personal.

Guidance from trusted male role models, close friendships, and participation in men’s groups have shown me how powerful it is when men have room to speak openly, receive support, and be challenged constructively.

I’ve also done my own work.

I know firsthand how difficult it can be to ask for help — and how much strength it takes to stay with the process of real change.

That lived experience shapes how I sit with other men. It’s taught me humility, patience, and deep respect for the pace of transformation.

Helping men do this work matters deeply.

It’s one of the most meaningful ways I can contribute to their lives, their relationships, and the generations around them.

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with many years of experience, I’ve worked with men in individual therapy, coaching, marriage and relationship counseling, and men’s groups.

My training is integrative and experiential, drawing from Internal Family Systems (IFS), Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), psychodynamic and somatic therapies, family systems, mindfulness and compassion-based approaches, and both Eastern and Western psychological traditions, including Integral Psychology.

Outside the therapy room…

I’ve been married for over 18 years, we’ve been together for more than 25 years, and we’re raising two kids.

I value practices that keep me grounded: breathwork, meditation, yoga, running, hiking, snowboarding, mountain biking, and camping with my family in our travel trailer.

A Different Way Forward

You don’t need to keep doing this on your own.

You don’t need to have everything figured out.

You don’t need the perfect words.

If something in you knows it’s time for this to change, that’s enough.

There’s a different way to move through this – one where you’re not just managing or pushing through, but understanding what’s happening inside you and responding differently.

You don’t have to do it all at once.

You just have to begin.
